MSc in Technology Management: Completed!
From late nights to final submission, a reflection on the journey, the challenges and the resilience it took to complete my MSc and continue my transition into project management.

This week marks a significant milestone in my journey: I officially completed my MSc in Technology Management with the submission of my final dissertation!
It’s a strange feeling reaching this point. For the past two years, studying has been a constant alongside everything else in life, those evenings, weekends and early mornings, all leading up to this moment. And now, just like that, it’s done…
A Journey That Started with Curiosity
Looking back to when I began this MSc in April 2024, the motivation was simple: curiosity about what came next.
While working as a web developer, I found myself increasingly drawn not just to the technical aspect of the work, but to the broader context around it. I started to become fascinated by how the projects I was working on were structured, how important decisions were being made, how our teams worked together and how the technologies we used helped to create value at an organisational level.
That curiosity grew into a clear direction: I wanted to move towards learning more about project management, strategy and leadership within technology-driven environments.
This MSc then became the foundation for that transition.
The Final Piece: My Dissertation
My dissertation brought together everything I had studied across the programme.
I decided to explore dynamic capabilities and organisational readiness for the transition to low-carbon transportation in the UK as it was a topic that captures various interesting aspects of technology management and sits at the intersection of technology, sustainability and strategy.
This allowed me to combine several key themes from my MSc:
- Technology and innovation management
- Sustainable organisations and environmental decision-making
- Strategic capabilities and organisational change
- Project and programme-level thinking in complex systems
More than anything, it pushed me to think critically about how organisations adapt to long-term, systemic challenges. This is not just achieved through technology, but through leadership, strategy and capability building.
More Than Just Academic Study
Completing this MSc has been about far more than gaining a qualification.
It has been a journey that challenged me:
- Academically: navigating complex theories, frameworks and real-world applications
- Professionally: reshaping how I think about my career and future direction
- Personally: managing time, energy and resilience through both stable and difficult periods
There were moments of uncertainty, especially when balancing study alongside work and life commitments. However, on reflection, it was these moments that were where the most growth happened.
A Two-Year Transformation
When I started this degree, I was firmly positioned as a web developer exploring new possibilities.
Now, I finish it with:
- A stronger understanding of strategy, innovation and organisational systems
- A clear direction towards project management and leadership roles
- Greater confidence in my ability to analyse complex challenges and contribute meaningfully
For me, this was not just another qualification: it was a transformation in how I think, approach problems and position myself as a professional.
Gratitude Along the Way
Reaching this milestone hasn’t been a solo effort.
I’m incredibly grateful to:
- The Open University and its staff for delivering such a flexible and engaging programme, which allowed me to balance my studies alongside work and other responsibilities.
- My family and partner for their patience and unwavering support through countless evenings and weekends spent studying. I know it wasn’t always easy while I focused on assignemnts and missed out on plans and I’m increadibly grateful for their understanding.
- Everyone who supported and encouraged me throughout or simply showed understanding when I needed to prioritise this learning journey.
All of this support has made a huge difference.
What Comes Next
While submitting my dissertation feels like the end of one chapter, it’s also the beginning of the next.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to:
- Receive my final results and overall MSc classification in June.
- Attend my graduation ceremony in October to celebrate with my partner, family and friends.
- Continue my transition into project and administration-focused roles, including completing my APM PFQ exam soon.
- Apply and build upon everything I’ve learned in real-world environments.
There are also some exciting developments on the horizon… but I’ll share more on those in due course.
Final Reflections
If there’s one thing this journey has reinforced, it’s that growth comes from committing to something challenging and seeing it through.
There were easier paths I could have taken over the past two years, but none of these would have given me the same sense of progress, purpose and direction that I now feel.
Completing this MSc isn’t the finish line, it’s the foundation for everything that is still to come and I’m so excited for what comes next!
