Getting Involved: Supporting BCS Pride and LQBTQ+ Representation

After over a year as a BCS member, I'm taking next steps to become more involved, support professional standards and support the LGBTQ+ tech community.

After over a year as a BCS member, I'm taking next steps to become more involved, support professional standards and support the LGBTQ+ tech community.

I joined the British Computer Society (BCS) to further my commitment to advancing my expertise in the IT industry and explore how technology can drive positive change in society.

After a couple of years working as a web developer, I’ve gained valuable experience and a deeper understanding of the industry, including the various technologies and professional practices involved. This journey has helped me establish a strong foundation and grow both technically and professionally.

BCS Pride

I came along to a committee meeting of the BCS Pride Specialist Group this evening, and joined due to resonating deeply with a shared passionate with the group about fostering greater visibility and equality for LGBTQ+ professionals within the tech industry.

BCS Pride is dedicated to increasing the visibility of LGBTQ+ members within the BCS and the broader tech community. Visibility is not just about representation — it’s all about creating a space where diverse identities are acknowledged, respected, and empowered to thrive.

For many LGBTQIA+ individuals, especially those who are transgender, the tech industry can be a place of opportunity, but like many professions can still present systemic challenges. Whether it’s navigating workplace biases, dealing with a lack of inclusive policies or confronting stereotypes, these barriers can prevent talented individuals from reaching their full potential. When this happens, not only does the person involved suffer, but as a society we suffer as these individual’s talents are not realised, hindering innovation and positive societal change. I believe that increasing representation and building a strong network of allies are crucial steps toward dismantling these obstacles.

My Experience

As a developer, I’ve found that technology offers incredible opportunities for growth and creativity. However, as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I’ve encountered situations where I haven’t been able to be fully transparent about my identity due to fear of bias or worse. These experiences are often echoed by many LGBTQ+ individuals I know across various different sectors, which has fuelled my commitment to advocate for a more inclusive industry within my own profession - one where diversity is not only welcomed but fully celebrated,

Being part of BCS Pride allows me to contribute to this mission by engaging with initiatives aimed at:

  • Raising awareness of LGBTQ+ diversity in tech through assisting the committee with holding events and talks.
  • Challenging stereotypes and promoting inclusive practices, such as past events the group has covered on the ethical use of AI and facial recognition technologies in respect to LGBTQ+ identities.

A Proud Tech Future

By collaborating with other diversity-focused organisations and amplifying LGBTQ+ voices across the tech sector, we can create a more inclusive and equitable industry. A proud tech industry where everyone, regardless of their identity, can thrive and contribute towards a better world through technology.

Together with BCS Pride, I’m committed to making meaningful progress toward this vision. Every project, every policy, and every conversation brings us closer to a tech industry that truly reflects the diversity of the world we live in, and when we are all accepted and happy, we can all do our best work and make a real positive difference.
